What's Inside a Head?
As I walk around Roman Catholic cemeteries and RC plots in other cemeteries, I see many, what I describe as ceramic, portraits of Jesus and Mary affixed to headstones. On many occasions, I see what remains after they have crumbled away. I always thought they were empty but a recent visit to St Joseph's RC Cemetery in Moston, Manchester provided examples of the interiors of these heads. First a few images of more complete examples, Then some examples of the contents . . .

Nice to see you again Laurie, I've not come across any like this but I can see why they crumble away, the heat cracks them the water & frost does the rest. Seems a same somting so nice does that.
As creepy as it is, the artwork on the tombstones is unique.
Mullings Family Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Missouri. It is the final resting place for two Civil War veterans, and one War of 1812 Veteran. Interred here are some of Missouri's first settlers, some coming in as early as 1818. This long disused, and almost forgotten cemetery is in desperate need of repairs. The stones are broken and scattered, the trees need cut back, it needs fenced to protect it, and it needs grass sown. This is going to take a lot of work and volunteers to get this off of the ground. We are working closely with the property owners, who are not only excited, but ecstatic to help us with this restoration project. So, please, help us to restore the dignity and respect to these folks who paved the way for you and I.
