Here are two kind gentlemen I met at the end of my visit to Hindley Cemetery. ‘Was I looking for a particular grave’, one asked. ‘One’s with interesting stories’, I said.Had I seen the graves of a 1924 Olympic medallist, a memorial to four young brothers who fell through the ice and drowned in 1954 and a gravestone recording the death of a father and his two sons in a colliery explosion, I was asked. No, I said and they took me to see them. I keep finding interesting locals who tell me about interesting grave. At Heywood Cemetery, an old lady gave me a guided tour of interesting gravestones she had seen while walking her little dog. At a slightly dangerous Manchester cemetery, an 80-year-old woman escorted me in to view some absolutely fascinating stories on stones. Her presence probably saved me from mugging or physical violence. She was respected by the locals and anyone with her was off limits to troublemakers.
