He Hear the Bells

‘Far, Far Away, Like Bells at Evening Pealing, the Voice of Jesus sounds Oer Land and Sea”
Joseph Prescott died April 16, 1891 aged 45 years. As if to emphasise the point a bell hangs out over the inscription – Hindley Cemetery

Joseph Prescott was my GGFather and lived in Taylor's Lane, Ince. He was a famous Bell Ringer in his time and performed in Churches in the local area as Campanologists' Magazines record. There is a plaque in the belfry of St Peter's in Hindley noting that he acted as conductor of a peel in 1885. An adjacent plaque records the death of his son, Edmund, in 1901 and of a commemorative peel made by his fellow ringers. Edmund was killed in a mining accident and is buried next to his father.

Welcome to the Graveyard Detective

An illustrated look at the World of Graveyards and Cemeteries. There are many Stories behind the Stones that Stand in them. Who knows what we might find?
