Hummm, I must admit to taking food and drink to a graveyard. When time to eat, we sat on the tailgate of our truck. During our very quiet and respectful visit, the children were allowed to drink from a canteen of water that I carried. The temperature was around it's normal 95 degrees. I saw my six year old do something I considered disrepectful, my son saw it at the same time, neither of us shouted out to her, we walked swiftly and I nearly drug her back to the truck and explained that we do NOT climb on tombstones. She got tears in her eyes and told me she just wanted to touch the General's sword and couldn't reach it without getting on the platform. I took her back and held her up so she could touch the sword of this gallant man.
No one else was there that day. I home schooled my children and in order to teach them the truth of the War of Northern Aggression, the information must be taken from Acts of Congress, court documents, and physical evidence. There are no books that even come close to telling the truth....But to the victor goes the spoils and the right to write the history.
My daughter often remarks on the good memories of that day as we pass the Generals marker nearly every week.
