Sunken Angel

Katie - In Ever Loving Memory of Kate Eva Thompson

Katie is buried in Duke Street Cemetery in Southport, Lancashire. She died in 1904, aged 39 years. Her memorial must have toppled over at some point and has been stood up in front of the grave. The fall must have been broken by the cross behind her which has broken off at the top. She looks like she has been part buried in the ground.

Such a shame. No wonder her angel looks so sombre.

Thank you for linking up with Cemetery Sunday.

Half-burying... hmm! A really odd way to do it, ie preserve the monument while also making sure that it is 'safe' for passers-by. I'm not sure I've ever seen it done like that before!

Welcome to the Graveyard Detective

An illustrated look at the World of Graveyards and Cemeteries. There are many Stories behind the Stones that Stand in them. Who knows what we might find?
